YORKE PENINSULA.

COVERED IN TWO SECTIONS ..

1. Stenhouse Bay via (essentially) East Coast to (near) Port Wakefield.

2. (near) Marion Bay via (essentially) West Coast to MERRITON (near Crystal Brook).

The Yorke Peninsula has, according to a number of travellers we have met, a poor reputation regarding being motor
home friendly. There are very few roadside rest areas and most camp spots attract a fee.
Information is that the region originally consisted of four council areas. They have now been combined into one
"District Council of Yorke Peninsula". Thus, the whole peninsula is controlled by the one council.
A resident motor home owner we spoke to said he had made representation to the mayor regarding setting up some
limited facilities for self contained vehicles. However, the reply was to effect as long as he was mayor, there
would be no free facilities. Our motor home friend pointed out that the council has introduced fees on all boat
ramps under its control. As mentioned, we noted that most camp spots are signed "permit required, fee payable".
However, us visitors are not told how to obtain this permit. Upon driving towards these camp spots, one comes
across that sign. It was learned from another camper that one is meant to obtain the permit from designated council
offices. We pointed out that the office was some 50 km back in the vague direction we had come. We suggested that
the system was somewhat "Irish". The other camper then said to just set up camp and pay "the man" when/if he came
around. Thus the whole system is rather vague.
Further, on the camp spot/potential camp spot issue .. there are numerous places around the coast, most accessible via
gravel roads. Suggest you obtain one of the Yorke Peninsula tourist maps from Info Centres to identify them.
Most attract that permit/fee mentioned above. However, if you are travelling casually as we were, we suggest you
set up camp and pay when "the man" arrives. We have formed the impression that some smaller, more remote spots
(possibly, more so on the west coast) are not signed "permit required, fee payable", (in fact we found and wrote up
  some) but use discretion.
Note. In general, roadside parking is only signed when it's on your left side. Not sure why, but guess to stop
one crossing to the other side of the road against oncoming traffic. This means, however, that parking spots on
the opposite side of the highway, to which we travelled, may be missed in these notes.

1. Stenhouse Bay via (essentially) East Coast to (near) Port Wakefield.
