The eastern extremity of this route is near Winton. It travels in a general westerly direction to Boulia.
From Boulia, the route is essentially north to Mt. Isa. It is single lane and sealed with some overtaking lanes.
There are numerous causeways where, in most instances, the road is dual lane. Scenery varies from flat plains to
sections of hilly country .. with many mesa type hill formations midway between Winton and the Middleton Hotel.
Along the Boulia to Dajarra section, a lot of stony country and stony hills are encountered.
