My dad, and others Aussies, went to war.
He returned wounded – injuries he was to suffer for the rest of his life.
Many of his mates didn’t return! In fact, 40,000 Aussies in WWII.
Who sent them to war? – politicians and bureaucreats!
They said “we are fighting for freedom, for Australia and all that it stands for.”
Our freedom to enjoy our great land – to travel, explore and enjoy it.
To camp beside our beautiful coast, our streams and our waterholes.
Now, fifty years later, where is that freedom?
The successors of those original potiticians and bureaucreats have caused it, and allowed it, to be erroded away.
Many roads have signs prohibiting our travels – “NO ENTRY, MINING LEASE”,
“COMMONWEALTH LAND”, “TRESPASSES WILL BE PROSUCUTED”, “ABORIGINAL LAND,
NO ENTRY. OBTAIN PERMIT” (sometimes two are needed) - more hassles, more fees!
One example noted - $88 per vehicle fee for 4 nights access, maximum of 4 vehicles at any one time.
We also have to pay a fee to drive on, or pass through others, such as National Parks.
Then, if you wish to camp overnight in “our” Parks, an additional fee is charged.
A lot of us, seeking our independence and wishing to follow that Aussie dream,
have purchased or built completely self contained vehicles.
We paid taxes, council rates, and various fees while we earned the money to purchase that vehicle.
We then paid taxes etc. on that vehicle with more taxes and fees on the additional work and materials
in order to be independent and self contained.
But, we are not free to use the vehicle as we wish.
Those same three levels of governments, plus others, that we paid the taxes and fees to,
allow their bureaucrats to govern, regulate and dictate to us,
with their so called wisdom, their agendas and so on.
Councils dictate that we cannot camp in their Shires - vested interests?
Some are quite serious, fines in the $1000 to $1500 have been noted!
State Governments dictate that we must pay (again) to use “our” National parks,
and where we can or cannot park overnight along “our” roads.
Federal Government, who could over ride the above in the interest of that promised freedom,
does not.
But instead, prohibits our access to “their land”. Or is it “our” land?
New fact - aboriginal land holding has been increasing – now 1 million sq. kms. or 20% of Australia.
Where is our freedom?
Australian Military Forces are still overseas at risk of death or wounding.
Still, no doubt, being told, for freedom and to allow them and their kids to enjoy the “great Aussie life”.
Once again there at the politicians whims, and no doubt, not seeing many of those politicians sons or daughters
on active service!
Go forward another forty years to when they are in a position to retire, buy their caravan, and want to
see a bit of this great land.
Do they realise that, at the current rate of erosion of our freedom, there will be next to none left!
There may be, at times, good reasons why a country needs to go to war.
But, give us back our freedom and our right to enjoy this great land.
