TRAVELLERS DREAMTIME.

We dream that all the roads be wide and smooth,
in fact, dual carriageway in each direction, on which to move,
so that we may drive sedately in the left lane at eighty k,
thus the trucks, buses and all in sundry that are in a hurry can get on their way,
a nice wide, grassed median strip for safety by keeping approaching traffic apart,
wide, level verges on which to park,
to take a photo or admire the view, or
we forgot to lock the fridge and the contents end up on the floor,
alternatively, if we have set off in the rain,
the wife will need to go to the toilet again!

We dream of towns with adequate parking for big rigs,
streets with spacious parking on each side, all not full of other gigs,
and space in the median area to park a road train or three,
all that and certainly not under a low tree,
alternatively, signed “caravan and motor home parking” beside the fresh water tank,
close to the shops, include in that, laundromat, pub, post office and bank,
and a toilet dump point and fresh water tap suitably signed so they may be found,
that dump point to be out in the open, accessible to our rigs, so others we need not hound,
not in one way streets, not way back from the kerb, not where other vehicles park,
that’s where some experts put them, and that’s is a real nark!

Some towns seem not to care,
weather or not we are there,
signs that say a thousand dollars fine on the dot,
just for over nighting in their non designated spot,
some cite for environmental and economic reasons,
but what about OUR economy in this fair season,
we have already paid a lot more to be self-contained, to suit our tastes,
hot water, generator, solar panels, shower, toilet, tanks to contain our wastes,
they wish to direct us to their caravan parks, but interested we are not,
where we have to pay again for those things we have already got!

Better still, we dream of enlightened towns that us travellers do welcome,
thus the town will be happy with its increased income,
provide us an area on which to park overnight preferably with some facilities,
power, showers and toilets for those that need them, suggest we pay a dollar or two for those utilities,
in return, we shall spend money in their town, speak favourably of it and send others along,
tourism they are chasing the town fathers say, a good way for the mayor to gain another gong,
those good facilities will make us happy, a number of days we will be tempted to stay,
after that time, there will be food, booze and fuel to buy, before we are finally on our way,
they are each a hundred dollars or more.
so you can see what the town will score!

We dream of open spaces, nice camping spots in the bush,
shade when required or maybe sun for our solar panels, to this end we push,
congenial company from other travellers, for happy hour and a yarn or two,
lots of time to sit around with no great amount of work to do,
no flies, mosquitos or sand flies, not too much wind or rain,
not too much to ask without being vain,
no hassles, just peace and quiet, a good supply of firewood,
that would be marvellous and just so good,
it’s good to be retired and no need to strike a blow,
nil pressure to move on, just our freedom to come and go!
