NEBO TO BOWEN .. VIA GLENDEN, COLLINSVILLE.



This is part of an alternative route to the Bruce Highway, or Clermont to
Charters Towers Road. It is 2 lane sealed apart from a 59.8 km gravel section
just north of Glenden to the Collinsville to Mt. Coolon Road.

0 km (267.4 km) commences 6 km north of Nebo along the Peak Downs Highway.
  Class 2 with permission. Hema map 8, E 7.
  Servo near north corner .. motorhomes have been known to park overnight
  with permission.
  Also, quite a number of tracks/roads with ? overnight parking possibilities
  around complexes just along the Glenden road.
  Facilities not noted, but close to roads so suggest would be quite
  noisy. OK big rigs.

42.7 km (224.7 km) Hail Creek mine .. turn off .. north.

  sides of road.

53.6 km (213.8 km)   Mt. Coolon Rd. to west. 4.4 km to Lake Elphingstone
  camping area turn off.
* LAKE ELPHINGSTONE camping area to south east.
  Class 1.  21° 32.231'S.  148° 14.161'E.  Hema map 9, D 7.
  Toilets, showers, tables, shade, water, rubbish bins, 150m max from road (little noise),
  OK big rigs as very large area, marginal TV, weak CDMA. Shelter under boat shed awning.

76.8 km (190.6 km) GLENDEN turn off to west.
 REST AREA .. just 30m along Glenden Rd., left side.
  Class 5.  Hema map 9, D 7.
  Tables, small area adjacent to road.

78.5 km (188.9 km) Start of gravel road. Signposted Collinsville 107 km.
  The sealed Newland Mine Rd. veers to the west. There is a "proposal" to
  extend that road through the mine area to link up with the Collinsville to
  Mt. Coolon Rd. At Mt. Coolon, it is possible to overnight beside the hotel
  .. enquire .. was $5 pvpn powered. Thanks Frank.
Gravel section is 59.8 km long .. took us 1 1/4 hours.

138.3 (129.1 km) Junction with Collinsville to Mt. Coolon Rd. Collinsville
  to the north. Signposted to Nebo 142 km.

161.8 km (105.6 km) BOWEN RIVER .. numerous tracks on both sides of river ..
  we parked on south side of bridge, east side of road near a power pole.
  Main road is unfenced, so obviously the area is private property.
  * Class 1. 20° 45.356'S  147° 51.032'E  Hema map 9, C 6.
  No facilities. Plenty of fire wood. 150m from road, little noise, some from
  railway, OK big rigs.
  Quite high road bridge over river, extremely high rail bridge further to the west.

185.9 km (81.5 km) COLLINSVILLE. All normal town facilities, hospital,
  caravan park.

267.4 km (0 km) Junction with Bruce Hwy. about 3 km north of Bowen.
  Last section of road runs through part of the extensive vegetable growing
  area around Bowen.
