LYELL, ZEEHAN and MURCHINSON HIGHWAYS. A10


  This major connecting route traverses Tasmania from near the south east corner to near the north west corner.
  It is dual lane and lane sealed.

  The Lyell Highway, commencing at Granton near Hobart, actaully passes through Queenstown and terminates at Strahan.
  That Queenstown to Strahan section is the B24 and will covered seperately at the end of the A10 section.

  The relatively short Zeehan Highway commences near Queenstown and terminates near Zeehan.

  The Murchinson Highway commences near Zeehan where the Zeehan Highway terminates. It travels in
  a general northerly direction and terminates at Somerset.

  There are a few sections of highway associated with the A10 that will be covered at the end of this A10 section.
  These are:
  a) the B10, on the northern bank of the Derwent from Bridgewater to New Norfolk.
  b) the B62 from New Norfolk to the commencement of the B61, the B61 from that point to its junction
  with C608. Then the C608 from that point to its junction back at the A10.
  c) the C173, then C177 to Waddamana power museum, then C178 to near the Great Lake.
  d) the B24 mentioned above .. relating to Lyell Highway.
  e) the B27 from Strahan through Zeehan to its junction with the Zeehan and Murchinson Highways.

  0 km (422.9 km) The southern extremity of the Lyell Highway (A10) commences at Granton at its junction
  with Highway 1.
  This section of the highway is rather picturesque with views of the upper Derwent Estuary.

60.9 km (9.4 km) Penstock Lagoon to east about 100m from road. Numerous entry tracks noted to what
  appeared to be level parking spots beside lagoon.

  Not investigated, plenty of firewood, looked OK big rigs, should be quiet if no logging trucks using road.

2.7 km Airport .. motorhomes often park at airport parking area where there is room for about 8 medium
  size motorhomes.

  Small terminal building has toilets and water. OK medium size rigs, right on edge of road ..
  so some noise from traffic .. particually so, early morning. Good TV.

Continue ahead about 10.5 km (gravel road in poor condition) for Macquarie Heads and caravan park.
