This major east west section of highway forms part of the southern route between the eastern states and
West Australia. It is dual lane sealed, but its width and surace condition varies from section to section.
Note. In general, roadside parking is only signed when it's on your left side. Not sure why, but guess to stop
one crossing to the other side of the road against oncoming traffic. This means, however, that parking spots on
the opposite side of the highway, to which we travelled, may be missed in these notes.
Note. CDMA phone coverage is next to nil when crossing the Nullabour .. though it's better towards the east.
Note. Water is naturally scarce in this section. What is available can, in general, only be used to re-fill
containers rather than fill tanks.
Another note .. there are really plenty of potential overnight camp spots across the Nullabour .. lots of unexplored
tracks off into the bush. Also, most signed parking spots/rest areas seem to have additional tracks, often extensive,
at their rear.
And another note .. in South Australia where highways pass through grain growing areas (as it does in the eastern part
of this section), there is normally a gravel/dirt track running parallel to the highway. We are guessing, but assume
the tracks are used for moving un-registered farm machinery. They do, however, offer potential overnight parking
spots. Suggest the track should not be blocked and risk the wrath of the farmer. Choose an suitable area where there
is sufficient parking space adjacent to the track.
0 km (488.9 km) Ceduna town centre. Motor home/caravan parking east of Post Office before roundabout in wide "angled"
street running from nearly opposite Post Office to near roundabout .. opposite "Autopro" shop.
Just through that roundabout on south side is Shell roadhouse .. reported traditionally good fuel price.
It's possible to walk to Foodland and other shops from above parking spot.
