(near) GAWLER TO BROKEN HILL (just a short section at this stage).BARRIER HIGHWAY.

This route gives the shortest distance between Adelaide, Port Augusta (and points west) and areas in the eastern
states north of a line drawn approximately between Broken Hill and Sydney.
It is dual lane sealed.
Note. In general, roadside parking is only signed when it's on your left side. Not sure why, but guess to stop
one crossing to the other side of the road against oncoming traffic. This means, however, that parking spots on
the opposite side of the highway, to which we travelled, may be missed in these notes.

0 km (169.1 km) Junction .. large interchange .. A20 to Renmark, road to Gawler, road to Mallala (which we took),
not certain, but assume this junction with the A20 is the beginning of the Barrier Highway.
From that junction, it is signed Adelaide 48 km.

There are possibilities of a free overnight stop around Burra. We drove through the old mine site where there
are a couple of lookouts .. ? those.

we had travelled into Terowie via the northern entrance which joins the Peterborough Road. Terowie is worth a look
as it appears to be essentially a "ghost town". We checked out the old railway station where we think it would be
possible for a self contained vehicle to stay overnight. Largish level grass/gravel area. Terowies claims to fame
(a) It ws the railway transhipment point between the 5ft. 3ins. guage line to the south and the 3ft. 6ins. guage to
the north .. the old Ghan to Alice Springs. (b) General McArthur addressed troops on the railway station ..see plaque.
